"Growth of The Journal"

August of 2011 marked the two-year anniversary of The Journal's existence on the interwebs (counting the 5-month hiatus in late 2009/early 2010). What started as a conversation with Brent in Portland one night during a trip out there in the summer of 2009, is now a thriving archive of information, reports, databases, profiles, and personal explorations as related to this thing of ours.

There were several moments that helped The Journal gain some credibility and visibility early on, such as my first reports on Canadian porn star and adult theater goer Velvet Skye. That report, HERE, kick started my conversations with Velvet Skye, and her promoting The Journal of Adult Theaters on her Twitter account @VelvetSkye. There is a reason she is Canada's greatest natural resource!  Make sure you check out her Tweets, as well as her website.

September 2009 also saw the first of Bob in Biloxi's always entertaining, smut-filled reports from the beautiful Gulf Coast.  His weekly reports are a staple here at The Journal, and always a must read.  Long-time reporters such as OldBeatNik, JaxBchBum, Major Voyeur, Donny Digital, and of course Brent in Portland supplied outstanding content in the early days of The Journal, and still continue to do so.

The ranks of unique reporters has grown to over 55 contributors from all over the USA and Canada, and that is amazing.  While this thing of ours is a discreet subset of the sex scene, it is thriving is some communities, getting by in some, and hanging on by a thread  in others.  Your contributions have been greatly appreciated by everyone, and we hope you continue to keep on submitting your reports and opinions. 

The Journal has seen steady growth month over month, which any good website/blog should show.  I have spent a lot of time improving the look and feel of The Journal, upping the number of pics and videos included with the reports, and introducing new features that hopefully resonate with you, the good readers of The Journal. 

How much growth, do you ask?  Let's bust out the bar graph, shall we?  Can someone get the lights?

To those of you keeping score at home, that's 40.1% growth August over July, 2011.  That's how much interest there is in this thing of ours out there.  Thank you for making it a record setting month!

Which brings me to my final point... This Week's Episode: "Field of Wet Dreams"

Until we can get a government that will follow the Constitution and leave the law to the Courts as well as holding their feet to the fire to enforce those principles it will get over regulated and harassed out of business. The Tea Party has been misunderstood in this regard, they want government out of our lives and out of businesses! So in closing on my political stump I believe the Tea Party would be good for this thing of ours!

Good Afternoon Good Doctor,

I have noted with dismay that, over the past decades, yes decades, that things are changing for the worse in "this thing of ours" and I wanted to wax philosophic a bit.  In the 1980’s and early 1990’s, I was a fairly regular attendee at ABS’s in the greater Palm Beach, Florida area.  Please do not think me a wealthy member of the Palm Beach set; I was one of the suckfish that serviced their community from time to time.

I regularly went to a small ABS that was not far from my home.  One day the County Commission passed a law that said there could be no doors on Video Booths.  They did this under the guise of “fire safety”.  Should the building ever catch on fire, the doors, that had locks on them, could trap the occupants and endanger their lives.  Now, I am not the smartest guy in the world, but I seriously doubt that the county had any desire to save people like me that they had probably labeled perverts.  Had everyone that attended gone up in flames, they would have been happy, but it was a good, and more importantly, apparently legal, way to eliminate the privacy of the booth. 

Eliminating privacy, of course, left police able to cruise through and observe what was going on in the booths and make arrests.  They did not actually make many arrests, as the fact that the doors were no longer there led to a curtailing of activity.  Lawyers would say the removal of doors had a “chilling effect”; and chilling it did.  The bookstore I was familiar with, The 45th Street Adult Bookstore, was actually eventually bought by the county and demolished.  This exact same thing happened in Okeechobee County, FL, but they took a slightly different tact. 

Okeechobee County, a very conservative, and very Bible-belt kind of community, required booth doors, but it did not make the ABS unprofitable enough and the county was not interested in buying it anyway.  They preferred much more Draconian measures.  When the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005 (Charley, Ivan, Jeanne, Dennis and Wilma) had an impact on this ABS, the building was damaged.  County officials were quick to condemn the building as unsafe for occupancy and forced its closure.  They then refused to grant any building permits to repair the premises, on what grounds I am not sure.  However, the owner sued to require them to issue the permits and lost at the local level.  The county made it abundantly clear that they would fight any appeal to the last dollar.  This resulted in the owner making a purely financial decision.  Between the lost business, the damaged building and repair costs, and the impending legal fees, he just gave up.  He spray painted a commentary blaming the county on the outside of the building for its closing and boarded the place up.  The county tried to force him to take the commentary off the building, but that was protected by the First Amendment and since they had gotten what they wanted anyway, they did not force the issue.  Had he had to go to Court and won, the county would have to pay his legal fees.  It was a Mexican restaurant the last time I was through the town.

Now that we are living in the era of Neo-conservative, Right-Wing Christian, Wingnuts, this thing of ours is in grave jeopardy.  My apologies to the members of the Tea Party that enjoy this thing of ours, but while their brand of fiscal conservatism may be incredibly appealing, it also comes with the fact that they want to take away, by pretty much any means necessary (you know, crowds with flaming torches and pitchforks) our ability to enjoy it.  The reason is that they do not view this thing of ours as being consistent with Christian values and, in their world, Christian values are the only values that are correct and good.  This is not a secular view of what our government should be.  They believe that we are, and ought to be, a Christian Nation and that will have costs to us.

The goal is really simple; drive every adult theater, bookstore, toy store, strip club and swingers club out of business.  These places are immoral according to the Christian Right (please see comments that New Orleans and Las Vegas were struck by natural disasters because they were “dens of iniquity”).  Regulate them into non-profitability and force them out of business, even buy them and bull-doze them when the owner is on his last financial legs; if a natural disaster can be used to facilitate this goal, all the better.

I do not know how to save this rapidly dwindling thing of ours to be quite honest.  I am not sure that we, as practitioners, can declare ourselves to be a minority and claim Constitutional protections from an oppression by the majority.  It clearly worked in the South with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but this thing of ours; not so much?

Well, Doc, I have now completed my rant, and I forgive turning The Journal into a soap box where I can espouse my personal beliefs regarding freedom as related to this thing of ours, but I felt compelled.

Sometime during the summer of last year (2010) I visited CTs Adult Theater. I think it was in June. I'd been to CTs about twice before and frankly I was both interested and disappointed. I'd heard about how hardcore CTs was but on my previous visits there had been little or no activity. A quick and short report for the fans of "This Thing of Ours".  This report comes to you from near the heart land and more precisely the Blue Ass State - humble apologies the Blue Grass State.  It is that one track mind thing.

Interstate News Adult Theater
Richmond, KY

Recently a report surfaced of a locale in the Richmond, KY area, fitting state initials.  The "Interstate News and Tobacco" is a very non-descript location off of I-75 at exit 90 or exit 90A from the south bound side.  it is located just down the side street where Dairy Queen is located.  The address is 161 Keeneland Dr, Richmond, KY.

The location has no noticeable sign so you will have to be alert.  The building is a light yellow with a red metal roof and parking is around the back.  They have signs warning of sitting in vehicles and also very strict rules about roaming around the small store.

Once you enter the store is clean and is the center of the facility.  Immediately to the right as you enter is the entry to the theater and booths.  A mere $10 gets you unlimited access to the booths and 2 theaters.  The booths and theaters were built around the outer wall of the store and you walk past the booths, 3 lefts and then you will encounter the 1st theater, show a gay movie (as of this report) and as you pass through the seating area you will seeing the entry to the 2nd theater where your straight movie is playing.  There will find a few couches and a couple of chairs.  Further through the theater is the restroom.

In terms of the booths, there were a total of 7 booths that were working with a good selections of movies.  One booth in the center of other 6 is in the corner and has plenty room for a couple to play behind closed doors.  The other 6 booths, in a group of 3's has GH between them, for the exchange of the hot stock tips or the winner in the horse race.

Being it was just after lunch on a Monday, expectations were low.  There was a good crowd of guys roaming around.  Just puzzled why people pay to enter and spend their time texting.  Overall the place was fairly clean with plenty of place to dispose of unwanteds and a clean restroom.

So a new place to make a stop.  Please see the attached photo of the venue.
