Flash Report! First Time Reporter JPT Hits Houston's Pinks (Discount 24 Hour Video) in November, 2019

Today we welcome first time reporter (but long time listener) JPT, and his detail-packed report from November 15th and 16th of this year from Houston.

Good Day, Doc...

I was recently traveling to Houston for a weekend and reviewed the infamous “Adult Theater Database” for suggestions.  I sought out some input from Houston residents and ultimately one man told me that = the best option was “Discount 24 Hour Video.”  He said that it’s known locally as “Pinks” – because the building is pink.  Having no knowledge of anything in Houston, I relied on this person’s suggestion as my choice off of “the list.”

It’s located at 730 Highway 6 South in Houston – and that’s my first word of warning.  That’s a busy divided highway, and you can’t make a left turn into the place.  It sits back from the road and is not well lighted.  So plan to arrive with the place on your right, and slow down … if you miss it you will have to start over again, and the turns and U-turns take a while because of the traffic.  There’s a DQ almost directly across the street – when you see the DQ coming up on the left, slow down and be prepared for a quick right. 

I visited on a Friday night.  The front is your standard, not fancy, adult video and paraphernalia store.  I approached the counter and acknowledged it was my first visit.  They call it a “membership club” and the clerk explained the rules.  The cost of the first visit is $15, and you receive a membership card good for a year.  Subsequent visits during that year are $10.  The rules are lengthy but basic – be polite, you might see nude people, don’t sit out in your car, etc.

Art Cinema Update (Hartford, CT) - 12/5/19 - We Still Need Your Help!

Doc here, with an update on the project to re-open The Mighty Art Cinema in Hartford, CT. 

A quick primer on what happened at The Art Cinema back in January, 2019... 100 Year old buildings have 100 year old problems. The Art Cinema opened in 1919 as The Rialto Theater, and over the years has been a fixture on Franklin Ave. in Hartford since then.  It is the 2nd oldest adult theater in the US (the oldest is the Strand Theater in Kansas City, MO), and is in dire need of some very necessary upgrades to be code compliant.

This list of work to be completed is EXTENSIVE, and even more than that, EXPENSIVE. 

This isn't The Good Doctor's first rodeo when it comes to watching an old theater being brought back to life by installing the elements that bring it up to 2019 building standards.  It's a painful process, and needs to be planned & completed hand-in-hand with the city. City Hall can work very slowly, and in the case with The Art Cinema, one could say this. 

Earlier in the year, this task looked daunting. But slowly, with the help of some dedicated individuals, the project found it's footing, and punch-list items are being completed.

It's important at this stage of the project, to let the good people who have patronized The Art Cinema in the past just how the old girl was doing.  And I am happy to say, the prognosis for The Art is now EXCELLENT!

Even with this encouraging news, the biggest and most expensive punch-list item with the overall project is dead ahead. Quote requests are out to the installation contractors for this latest infrastructure element, and Ernie is waiting on the numbers.  The numbers will be scary, according to Ernie.  And this is where The Art Cinema needs your help!

Running in parallel, a core group of Art Cinema enthusiasts started a GoFundMe page to assist Ernie with the tremendous cost of the infrastructure upgrades: STACO: Save The Art Cinema Organization !

Flash Report! The Editor Hits New Release Video in St. Charles, MO in November, 2019

The Journal welcomes back long time contributor and senior Journal reporter The Editor, with the first of two Flash Reports from a recent expedition to Missouri. The first report focuses on New Release Video in St. Charles, MO. from November of 2019.

Report #1 - New Release Video

Hey Doc,

It's been awhile since I've sent a report, so here goes:

I had some business in St Louis recently, and decided to see what action I could find.  Years ago there used to be a LOT going on at the various theaters on the East Side, but most of those are gone now.

It was a Friday and I decided to start out on the west side of the metro. I found myself at New Release Video in St. Charles, MO.  It’s located on the back side of a little strip of businesses and is kind of hard to locate. But if you drive around back and go to the end, you’ll find it.

The place is really small.  It has two theaters, one gay one straight. Each only has a few overstuffed leather chairs/sofas. In the rear of each theater is a small room where two people can stand privately and still see out a window.  It does not have the intense vibe of the East Side, and guys were cruising and some playing with each other. 

About 9:00 pm, two couples arrived and livened up the place. One couple appeared to be first timers.  They got a video to play in a private room and from the outside, there didn’t seem to be much going on.

Flash Report! Mr. Clean Hits Metro Station in Louisville KY in October, 2019

As always, thanks for all the hard work required to keep the site cooking. 

Your database states that Metro Station in Louisville, KY “needs an update”.  But based on my recent visits, you don’t need an update, you need to get there pronto!

My long-distance truck runs have taken me through Louisville a few times lately and I’ve made it a point to stop by Metro Station each time.  My success rate has been pretty good there, but let me start by giving your readers a quick overview of the place (or as Sgt. Joe Friday says, “Just the facts.”)

Metro Station is easy to find, right off a main road, with a good-sized parking lot out front and some parking in the rear. It is well lit and feels safe. They offer the usual ABS fare for sale and have an arcade (they refer to it as ‘peeps’… old school) and three theaters.  They charge $10 for the ‘peeps’ arcade and $10 for the theaters. 

The arcade has 12 booths, eight of which have one or two glory holes (harder and harder to find these days).  The booths are a good size and relatively clean. Each booth has a video screen with a four-screen display above and a good selection of 56 channels to choose from. Best of all, no money is required beyond the entry fee. 

The smaller theater seats about 12 or so in large faux-leather chairs and a couple of two-seaters with a screen up front.  The larger theater has seating for about 25-30 in similar chairs or couches. It has two screens up front and one on either side of the room.  And off the larger theater is a smaller room (MS refers to as the ‘grotto’) with six loungers (those s-shaped things) along one wall, facing the one screen in the room showing gay videos. 

My first run through Louisville allowed me to visit Metro Station on a Wednesday and Thursday evening.

Doc here, a man who some say provided the voice of the cartoon legend Pascal the Parrot in the cartoon series "Mrs. Robinson's Pokies", which aired in color on Canadian television in the early 1980's.

There is perhaps no more mysterious location in this thing of ours than the Las Vegas area. There are close to a dozen adult theaters (of the micro-mini variety), and in my opinion, since the closing of Babe's Adult Theaters (which was kind of awesome), they are all very weak.

However, an equally mysterious man, one of the original reporters here at The Journal (dating back to 2009) popped up in Vegas and points south, got the lay of the land, and has submitted the following report.

I visited Sin City for a business meeting last month and had a free afternoon, so I decided to check out the local scene.  The adult theater venues in Vegas have really suffered over the last couple of years, so I ventured down to Bullhead City, about a two hour drive south, to visit some theaters listed in your database.

The first was Adult City ABS.  The theater there only has a three-person couch and three chairs, so I would not regard it as “couple friendly” due to its small size. The admission fee was reasonable ($6 with in/out privileges all day), but for the few hours I was there, I had the place all to myself.
